New owners are continuing the Wadequots Mill tradition of quality stone ground grains.
We have tried 3 quotcolorsquot of grits and all were delicious. Looking forward to making buckwheat cakes with their flour.
The mill is beautiful in a rural mountainous setting. The inside is very interesting as it does a good job in explaining which grains are being ground, the process and history of the place. You can also buy their flours and cake mixes. Some grains are grown in PA and other neighboring states, but they are ground here. Support your local mill with a purchase as a way to thank them for the free tour.
What a great historic mill to stop and see. My parents, me and my children were all fascinated to see all of the period equipment still in the mill. Its the longest continuously working Mill in the region so I cant wait to get home and try some of their product. We all had a great time.
Nice visit to this historic mill. John the, owner was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The history of milling and the tie into the Valley was nice.
Thank you for visiting us and were glad you enjoyed the history and tradition of Wades Mill.
Wades Mill is a great attraction for anyone driving the by-ways of S.W. Virginia near LexingtonStaunton. One of the last working mills in the greater area. We received an excellent tour from the relatively new owner. Plus, an opportunity to purchase various milled grains, local honey, and maple syrup. Very picturesque.

Stone grist mills are the most ancient form of flour mills, with flour produced by the grinding of grain between stationary and rotating mill stones. In a stone mill, the entire grain kernel in its natural, original state is groundbran, germ, and endosperm.
Preserving the mill, one stone at a time. At the border between Fauquier and Prince William Counties, the Chapman-Beverley Mill cuts an imposing figure against its wooded backdrop. The massive five and one half story structure, originally built in 1742, is thought to be the tallest stacked stone
The grounds, walls, and even skies that shine down on Wades Mill are full of family history. The property first lured in Captain Joseph Kennedy when the Shenandoah Valley as we know it was just springing to life around 1740-1770. Its anyones guess whether Mr. Kennedy knew how long he would remain here, but his family held onto and maintained the property for 100 years At this time, in 1882, James F. Wade came along and continued with the gorgeous plot, he too kept the mill in the family, keeping it in operation for four generations.
This entire spread is yours to tour, check out the mill house and the mill itself, along with all of the equipment necessary to make the operation work. The grounds themselves are also a delight. Depending on the time of year you visit, the landscape will vary dramatically. Either way its beautiful and full of a unique charm.
More than just a flour mill, there are a number of special events held on site, including cooking classes, food festivals, guest chefs, and much more To see what is going on when you plan to be in the area, check out the official website for Wades Mill.
RAPHINE The kettle that Glenn Wilson uses to cookhis apple butter every year is more than 130 years old.
Wilson bought it off a Greenville woman about 20 years ago. It had been in her family for more than 75 years. The kettle has history and purpose.
Its for that reason and others that Wilson takes great care in making sure the apple butter doesnt burn to the bottom of the kettle, ruining it. Also, who wants to burn a batch of deliciously sweet apple butter
Making sure the bottom doesnt burn, however, is a tedious matter. It involves keeping the gallons of apple butter moving using a very large stir stick. The longer the apple butter moves the thicker it gets.
After about 10 hours of stirring the apple butter reaches its peak consistency and flavor and can be bottled for sale. For the 25thannual Apple Butter Festival at Wades Mill on Saturday, that meant getting that butter moving around 530 a.m. so that it would be ready for sale by 3 p.m.
An earlier batch of apple butter was cooked on Tuesday, so that the hundreds of Apple Butter Festival attendees who arrived prior to 3 p.m. could purchase some as well. They were sold out within two hours, said Chad Groah, who has done extensive work at and on Wades Mill.
Youre cooking the moisture out of it, Groah said. Thats what makes it different than apple sauce. Youre cooking out most of it and leaving the sweetness. The apples are losing all the water.
