Litchfields Prospect Mountain is part of that mining history, and remnants of its copper and nickel excavations are still evident along the 3 miles of trails that wind across the 1,350-foot summit. Much of the hill is preserved within the Litchfield Land Trusts 328-acre Prospect Mountain Preserve.
The Connecticut Forest and Park Associations blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail runs through the heart of the preserve, part of the 28-mile-long trail that runs from Wolcott to Waterbury. But this 1.7-mile section is like an island running only through the preserve and is not connected to the main route.
Visitors are offered a choice shortly after venturing into the forest from the trailhead on Cathole Road. They can take the longer Mattatuck Trail or a shorter trail marked with yellow blazes. The yellow trail, a path more than a half-mile long, will bring visitors to the overlooks quicker. The Mattatuck is a bit more of a rambling and arduous climb.
The preserve has three outstanding overlooks, including a pair along the north summit and one on the south summit. The north summit gives visitors a view of a swath of green forest and distant hills with white church steeples sticking out from the canopy. Another overlook has views to distant hills with the Shepaug Reservoir tucked into the landscape. The south summit is equally spectacular with views to area mountains and farm silos and barns jutting out from the canopy.
There are six mine shafts along the journey, each one marked on the map. Most are filled with water, but there is one near Granniss Pond that opens its maw into the depths of the earth. Over its history, Prospect Mountain was home to both copper and nickel mines. Copper mining began in 1840 and lasted through the Civil War until 1880.

Garnet The State Mineral of ConnecticutIn 1977, the Connecticut General Assembly designated the mineral garnet, variety almandine, as the state mineral. Welcome to a new year and a new month. Garnet is the birthstone for January, and the almandine garnet happens to be Connecticuts state mineral. Garnets can appear in all three of the main classes of rock, but in our state, they are most prevalent in schist, which is a metamorphic rock that has experienced both high temperatures and pressure. When enough aluminum is present during the metamorphism, garnets form. Besides being fashioned into jewelry, garnets, rating 6 to 8 on the Mohs8217 Hardness Scale, have been put into industrial use as abrasives, such as coated sandpaper.

Madison was my next stop on the trail. Like every good Connecticut resident, I visit Hammonasset Beach State Park now and then, but this time I was focused on one thing the western section of the beach where sand has a pinkish hue. During the off-season, when the sand is not covered with beach blankets, its easy to see the color difference from afar. Up close, the red and pink grains sparkle.
If you look very closely, you will see black grains are mixed in with the garnet grains. This is magnetite or ilmenite, and it is magnetic. Next time you head to the beach, pack a magnet along with your towels and sunscreen
Why is this garnet-rich sand only found in a small area of Hammonassets two miles of beach
Shoreline erosion has been identified as a problem at Hammonasset since at least 1947, especially at its western end. After studying the issue and securing funding, beach stabilization began in 1954. Sand at this state park was replenished several times since, with its exact origins unknown, though some of it was pumped from offshore sand deposits.
